Merry Christmas

I love gifts! I love giving gifts to people and I always find myself giving random gifts. The only problem with this is that I sometimes spend weeks thinking of the perfect gift. Also, I do not like my recipients’ receiving any hints of my intentions, hence, discretion is of utmost importance. However, the story is entirely different for my close friends. Due to the nature of our friendship and my in-depth knowledge of them, I would most likely have an idea of their perfect gift since they may have mentioned it to me in random conversations.

A thoughtful gift is always the best gift. It is received differently because it is fulfilling a need. Gifting makes people happy. Seeing the smiles, gratitude, and expressions of hope that your act of kindness has evoked on peoples’ faces truly makes giving worthwhile. I believe that giving provokes happiness in the lives of the givers.

Jesus is God’s gift to humanity – a very thoughtful gift from an intentional Father. Our Father did not just get us the first gift on display, he took out time to curate and give us the best gift. Jesus is the greatest gift that has ever been given since creation and it remains true to this day.

“For here is the way God loved the world—he gave his only, unique Son as a gift. So now everyone who believes in him will never perish but experience everlasting life.”

John 3:16, TPT

“A person really loves his friends if he dies on behalf of them. Nobody could love anyone more than that.”

John 15:13, EASY

God keeps on giving us gifts all the days of our lives. His love is a breath of fresh air every morning, and as certain as the sunrise and sunset. His love is unfailing and everlasting. His love is the gift that keeps on giving. How cool is that?

“The Lord’s unfailing love and mercy still continue, fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise.”

Lamentations 3:22-23, GNT

In these times and seasons, giving gifts no longer requires us to break the bank or face any undue pressure; a simple gift as your time is valuable and resourceful. Remember, you have a myriad of intangible gifts to give such as the gift of your time, the gift of a listening ear, the gift of helping, and much more. We should normalize giving gifts to random strangers which can be a simple smile.

Finally, when we transition from this season of giving, let us cultivate the habit of gifting regularly. Do not let gifting be a seasonal culture. We do not have to wait for a particular season in the year to give gifts to others. Let us normalize visiting the orphanage, friends in need, nursing mothers, pregnant sisters, etc. Let us also normalize praying for your loved ones – that’s a beautiful gift.

“Christmas is based on an exchange of gifts, the gift of God to man – His unspeakable gift of his Son, and the gift of man to God – when we present our bodies as a living sacrifice”.

Vance Havner
